The Year 6 Students are currently working on:

the Passé Composé and learning to distinguish between tenses in text, and also being introduced to the future with ALLER

we are also looking at student led questions as they come up in discussions and these have included:

possessive adjectives: mon, ma, mes
de/ du/ a/ aux
as well as still working out the differences between P.C verbs which require etre, and those with avoir

The results of the last quiz were generally very strong and we are seeing integration of this knowledge in class (which is far more important than the quiz for true assessment).

We have been very, very lucky to have been given access to an assistant on Tuesdays and Thursdays and the students are now working in two smaller groups. This has allowed for far more personal attention and the time to answer individual questions more thoroughly. Our assistant is Madame Chalumeaux who is an exceptional language teacher (German and French) and who speaks fluent English, so please encourage your students to take full advantage of the smaller group settings.

In general, the class is working better than ever and deserve serious congratulations for staying focused through the heat. It is wonderful to see this class taking off! Let's hope it is a postive indication of what they will be capable of in secondary.

Year 3 May/ June Posting

Year 3s are currently focusing on clothing and shopping vocabulary. You have hopefully seen your child hard at work making a suitcase of clothes for homework, which will be working on describing in class.

We have been "shopping" for shoes, asking for different sizes, colours, and styles and will be shopping for clothes in the coming week.

The students will only have 40 mintues of French next week, but there will be homework going home so please do continue to review the work in the "cahier" and the songs for the assembly!

The students have now all received their three page packet of the verses to the songs and it would wonderful if you could find some time to have your children "teach" you the songs and the motions.

During French library time we have been tying into the UoI and reading many fairytales, and have done quite a bit of class work on Hansel and Gretel.

Enjoy your long weekend, and try to get out and do something in the French speaking world :-)

Next thursday, May the 28th, there will a test to assess your skills at writing words, at completing sentences , at reading sentences in order to put the steps of a recipe in a correct order, at understanding a French cook saying a recipe in order to tick everything he is using.

You should also have all of all of your cards from the game and be reviewing those nightly. There are a lot of verbs to learn, but with a little bit of effort and time you will find that they come very quickly and naturally. Practicing 15 times for 3 minutes is far far better than one hour once.

Please ensure that you finish the cards for the passé composé.
This entails taking all of the cards which are hopefully in your conjugation envelope, cutting them out, and ensuring that they have the infinitive on one side and the passé composé form (provided on the accompanying sheet) on the other side.

What if I "finished" in class?

Writing the words is step 1. LEARNING the past tense form so you can communicate in the most common tense (PAST) is the second and most important step.

You do not want to walk around telling people what you are in the process of doing for the rest of your life.; "I am eating toast". Humans tend to talk about things that have already happened, to relate stories and experiences from the past. So focus on the passé composé as an important step in building your true communication skills.

Once you finish cutting and writing, the real work is to learn the verb tenses. Test yourself - they are mini- flash cards, or have someone in your family or on your bus test you for fun.

What if I can't find the paper distributed in class and I didn't take the opportunity to go with Mrs. Mitchell during break time to get a second one as offered?

You are still responsible for the cards. You can:
xerox/ scan a copy from a friend
use a grammar book to look up the verbs individually

This should not entail much physical work, and learning them goes quickly if you give it a try. Ten minutes each night should do the job for most of you. The better you know them the more fun the game is. The less you know them the more you will slow down the entire class, your own learning, and the game.

Learning - it's a choice.

The homework assignment for Tuesday is simply to work with the IR conjugations presented on the introductory sheet. The prior websites apply for reference and practice. Having access/ owning the 501 French Verbs or the equivalent would be hugely helpful (now as well as in secondary).

The entire sheet is not due, ONLY the verbs on the front of the sheet.

Friday is the Assembly in which there will be dancing, the results of the cooking and poetry workshops, and a bake sale for the Restos du Coeur. An excellent cause to support with great food as well.

Year 4 is doing an absolutely brilliant job with all of our current focus areas - so much so that we are hoping to capture a good portion of it on film:

A big thank you goes out to the families who have been supporting their students in learning the songs and dialogs. The home support for year 4 is outstanding and there is tangible progress to prove it.

The two coming weeks are dedicated to La Semaine de la Francophonie and we have been looking at the story of the French Acadians and their struggle to deal with diverse environments in Canada and then Louisiana. This ties in very well with the current Unit of Inquiery on how environment impacts human culture. I will be sending home a list of relevant and approved links for sharing Mardi Gras, Cajun and Zydeco Music, French Cajun recipes and language, and Acadian history with students. Please do make use of the wealth of resources on the Internet and your own experiences with any of the above.

Students have a range of workshops from which to chose: cooking, dancing, and poetry/ theatre for the double periods in these two weeks and will be sharing their learning in an assembly Friday, March 27th.

Year 3 is currently working on mastering the prepositions to better be able to understand directions and full sentences in text and oral French.

We started with a kinesthetic activity on the playground, one which can easily be duplicated at home.

We are also branching out into French Literature. We will have a library period soon before Lab Time so that we can all explore the books on offer. Please do check out French books and impress your families with how beautifully you are all sight reading. We have been doing group readings in class to introduce books available in the library and support our current vocabulary and we have some oustanding readers!

We are finishing off our food unit with more complex plays about supermarket survival and restaurant excursions. The dialogs coming home will be much easier to learn with a helpful adult involved.

There are still several students missing part II of the WIKI and we need to move on if we want to finish this before year's end, so please do your homework if you are missing part II (current age). Thank you to the many who have gotten this in.

The homework at present (Tuesday) is to finish the ART PART of the WIKI project, you at 35 with your priorities and goals clearly symbolised. Absolutely no words please, symbols only.
You can use - photos, collage, computer images, art- work, pop- ups, etc. Feel free to mix and match watercolor, markers, coloured pencil, and stencils. Some of you have a very good start from the art class work today. All work due next Tuesday.

On Thursday we will be working on part III of the WIKI and the homework will follow. Questions 1-15 were due last week for the WIKI and there are several students with work due. Please do not jeopordise your overall results by failing to hand in the homework. Thank you to those of you who did it, though there are some REDOs which will be returned on Thursday.

The homework for Friday is to answer the 15 guiding questions for section three of the WIKI project.

For those of you who have not yet handed in section II of the WIKI, you will not be able to work in the lab on Friday until that is done.

I know you are all eager to start on the art section of your project. You are of course welcome to get strarted, but you might want to wait as we will have access to the ART ROOM on Tuesday which should allow you to get some work done which might not be possible if you don't have supplies at home, and then you can finish it up from there.

Think of your format: magazines, collage, cut outs, pop- ups, fold- outs, print outs - there are so many ways to bring your ideas across in an interesting way. How will you make your project stand out?

Remember please to use full and complete sentences in answer the 15 questions and to discuss all of your class questions with your families!! This is a very good time to talk about:

future professions
universities and higher education
family size
religion
volunteering

All of the aspects of your person which make you an important member of your future community.

Thank you to my sixth grade boys and girl :-) for behaving so well for the substitute. There were many positive comments on the cooperation and work level.

As there appears to have been some confusion/ forgetting of homework responsibilities, please be aware of the following:

the ER verb sheet worked on in class and assigned for homework during the Thursday substitution period will be collected, with no late work option, on Thursday of this week.

you are responsible for having finished the WIKI project writing part II
(this was assigned for last Thursday)
there are three format options:
1. type directly into the WIKI using your password
2. type into a word document and print to hand in
3. write out in clear printing and skipping lines your part II paragraphs

Those already submitted have been very good. I see that many of you have gone ahead and found your web links and the URLs to support your work. Excellent work!

I also see that people are making use of the resource (example on bright yellow paper) and that the spelling is much improved. Bravo!

I am really enjoying reading about you and your interests.

Now we are working on the art part of the WIKI project. We will have access to the art room and supplies next Tuesday (March 17). In the meantime, please keep the guidelines in mind and start your searches on internet, in magazines, and start drawing.

B. a life balance; not only your profession, your family, or your sports interests. You need to decide on all of the most important elements and how you want to divide them up in order of importance.

The sixth grade is currently working on the second third of their WIKI project.
The homework for Tuesday is:
type (either as a word document or directly into the WIKI (URL provided in class) the remainder of the first third and the entirety of the second third of the project.

By the end you should have:
Your short personal description of yourself and your preferences as an 18 month old. (already corrected)
A longer personal description of yourself TODAY at your current age. (work in progress)

The model provided (bright yellow sheet) is only the minimum. You are welcome and encouraged to write more about who you are and what you believe and want in life.

Topics can include:

sports
hobbies
religion
political views
political concerns
national identity
linguistic identity
interests
foods
music
television
movies
computer/ IT interests
animals/ pets
family and friends

We are only working on the first draft of the second part, so don't let the fear of mistakes slow you down. Do the best you can. Feel free to use:

PLEASE avoid the sentence translators as they make FAR MORE MISTAKES than you ever would. Trust yourself and your own sense of what sounds right.

The sixth grade is currently working on a WIKI which incorporates art, technology and their current French focus: present tense verb from all three groups and irregulars, adverbs of time, adjective agreement with an emphasis on nationalities.

At this point, the students should have brought in:

a list of vocabulary terms specific to them (having used a dictionary, French speaker, or translater) about their professional ambitions for the third age group (age 35)
a photo of themselves before the age of five but preferably at about 18 months of age.
a descriptive paragraph (written in class) in typed and spell-checked format for that first age group (18 months)

Given that printer and computer access issues at home are an ongoing issue, please know that a neatly written alternative is always acceptable. Not bringing the homework is not acceptable.

The following students have brought in their photos and handed in their paragraph on time:

If a student name is not on the list they are missing one of the items listed above. The WIKI will be far richer if everyone manages to participate in full, and this can only be done with homework.

You can practise your vocabulary thanks to the websites you will find on this blogg, the same as those we have used during our ICT period.
Some parents asked me to give them the details on the French ressources we use in class :

=>the reading book is called LEO and LEA, Belin edition, ISBN 978-2-7011-3841-1 or you can find the complete set with the reading book, exercises books.

=>you can also find from the same editor the set of 14 stories from LEO and LEA called "les livrets de Léo et Léa".

=> we also use the DVD "les histoires du Père Castor", you can find different DVD's usually with at least 12 to 16 different short stories, the same stories exist in books of course.

=> to work on the phonetic aspect of the language we use "30 phonèmes en comptines" éditions RETZ, ISBN 978-2-7256-2577-5- you can find activities + a song for each sound and the cd that goes with.

You can find them on any commercial websites.

1-Sur le modèle de la description de l'extraterrestre A (feuille déjà distribuée) , écrivez une description des extraterrestres B, C, D en utilisant les parties du corps et les couleurs que vous leur avez attribuées.
2- Choisissez ensuite l'extraterrestre B, C ou D et re-écrivez la description en utilisant cette fois les adjectifs possessifs "Son-ses"
Exemple pour l' extraterrestre A avec mes couleurs:

Thanks to Year 4 being such a responsible and mature group for their age. They are making the tremendous leap from "cahiers" to "classeurs". Each child has been provided with a new red binder with dividers and plastic sleeves. Families are asked to please ensure that the binders come filled with college-ruled lined paper to school which is regularly replenished, as well as sharpened pencils and full erasers. Dull pencils and eraser bits make a poor start to class; please help your students get ready for success every night by packing their bags properly with the necessary items for academic achievement.

The purpose of the binders is:

to actively teach organisation
to allow for reprioritisation of items
to serve as a resource
to protect student work
to provide opportunities for categorisation
to allow for the use of double sided papers
to expedite the distribution process in class (no more glueing!)

Students must include information in their binders which will help them to be returned if lost:
name, address (if safe for your family), telephone number (mobile or landline), email address

The binder will come to represent a lot of work so please help your student label it properly. We will create class labels with school information.

Students are also preparing L'Escalade and have been working on expressing preferences with infinitive action verbs. Each verb has a gesture and a symbol and practicing these will help with French progress and future assessments.

Wishing you a happy holiday filled with the many French songs your students now know and please bring back fresh supplies for a wonderful start to the New Year.

Year 5 has beautifully completed not only their projects for L'Escalade but also helped assemble many of the other grade levels due to their efficiency, organisation, ability to work well together, and artistic skill. Merci les Anges de 5M!

Year 5 will also be singing at L'Escalade and has been singing in class as well as we are working on Vive le Vent with our whole range of band instruments - hopefully a sneak preview during the Open House. If not, I am sure private performances can be arranged in your living rooms.

Content wise, year 5 is making the big jump from oral expression and vocabulary as their focus to the power of grammer and conjuations. We are currently working on mastering the use of the various pronouns and dealing with replacement of "things" which have genders in French, but not in English.

The quiz is Tuesday, December 16th. Remember to chant:
"I, you, he, she, or it, we, you they: these are subject pronouns/ Je, tu, il, elle, nous, vous, ils, elles, ce sont les pronoms du sujet!" all weekend!

Year 5 continues to be a delight to work with and a group who have the motivation, self- discipline, and work ethic to advance with ease!

Chris Fuller has made this video about how easy it is to spellcheck a Word document written in Spanish by using the default multilingual proofreading tools in Word. Of course this works for French, too (or any other language which is installed in your copy of Microsoft Word).

The sixth grade is currently working on group projects creating posters using their knowledge gained in the PYP inquiry unit on religions, and their related French vocabulary.

As each group is working on a different topic area, homework is individual and each student should know whether their work can be completed in the allocated class time (not likely) or requires additional homework. This may involve: drawing, painting, printing, researching, or making a three dimensional version of the focus content.

Given that most students did not do the last homework assignment, the following also needs to be done:

1. Find a quality site on L'Escalade in both French and English, detailing the history of the event.
Many students will need parental support on this as they are having difficulty with the research.
Expanding the search terms to include: Switzerland, festival, and history should help as the term Escalade has multiple meanings.

2. In very basic French sentences (using both a dictionary and the 501 French verbs) students are to retell the Escalade story on Menu Numero 4. Finding a good French website on the history will greatly facilitate this task.

Please ensure that your student has:

multiple sharpened pencils for each day
a working pen and highlighter
lined writing paper
their French binder in their bookbag ready to go in the morning

Coming prepared to class saves everyone a great deal of time and hassle. Organization is a lifelong skill. Merci de votre appuis!

The Homework assignment will be the same as last week (at least, the 2nd part of it that is to say , the sentences about the cycle of water). Actually this part was due next Thursday the 27th and not as I wrote it by mistake for Thursday the 20 th. I do apologise for these mixed up dates . Now, because the class 3 Homeroom teachers are taking your children on a fieldtrip and that there will be no french class on Thursday the 27th, I extend this assignment to Monday the 1st of December. I also inform you that on Tuesday, December the 2nd, I will give your children an end of Unit Assessment concerning the Water Unit. From Thursday 4th of December onwards, I will work with your children on the Unit concerning Switzerland. First we will study some historical events and mainly the Escalade facts then we will learn about some geographical facts that will take us back to the fieldtrip we had to the Leman lake on November the 4th and some cultural facts.

The homework tonight is to search for websites related to L'Escalade's history.
We are looking for websites which are interesting, accurate, designed for children, and with strong visual support.

In our CAHIERS we have a list of key words which can be typed into the search engine to get sites in French or English which are likely to be of interest.

Each child is encouraged to look for a minimum of three websites and not to take the first three as these will likely have been duplicated by classmates.

Students with prior knowledge of L'Escalade are encouraged to look for more specific elements, more detailed information regarding the "personnages" in the story, and/or traditional Escalade music which is familiar to them being performed.

If you have texts at home relating to this celebration please do send them in so that we can share our knowledge in class.

Students are also currently memorising a poem on the days of the week and need a helpful partner, as well as learning about family members. Many of our students are still unclear as to in-law relations and step - family members and this is an excellent time to discuss family composition with your child. Please have them teach you the French vocabulary as well.

We are building our vocabulary base. Please work with your child to learn the songs which reinforce the vocabulary, devise quizzes and tests, make posters and flashcards together (or use the ones coming home from school :-) to master the vocabulary and spelling patterns.

If you speak another language, or other languages at home, this is an excellent time to reinforce academic vocabulary in your home languages which your children may not otherwise be acquiring. Why not make multilingual flashcards together? Hungarian on one side, French on the other. This is particularly useful for children learning Arabic or Cyrillic scripts and who need additional opportunities for relevant practice and use of their different alphabets and languages.

Currently our focus areas are:

The French Alphabet with particular emphasis on: A E I O U and J, G and Y - practice spelling family names and relatives' names. Talk about your family tree or spell the names of countries and capitals to broaden your child's understanding of the world.

Classroom objects (Flashcards arriving home shortly) - your child already knows the names with a gesture and picture to match

Colors - there are many Internet games to reinforce the colors, simply Google French vocabulary games - colors for options.

Body Parts - poster distributed for study last week, but your child should know these very well and can teach you games and songs to reinforce them. Flash card opportunity.

Numbers - up to 20, this can serve as a great chance to work on more advanced math games with your child depending on their own mathematical ability level. Play with dice, count objects when out driving, learn about money (Francs, Euros, denominations).

Songs: your child is learning many songs and needs an appreciative audience, please encourage them to share with you:

We are also building on with Escalade and Winter songs so do ask regularly. There are again many websites that can be useful and fun in learning, playing, and simply listening to French songs and Escalade songs. Google will take you there with: "L'Escalade chansons" as joint search words and French Christmas Songs, Songs in French, chansons pour les enfants, comptines et chants.

If your child sees you enjoying French and playing in French they will follow your lead! Thank you for your support and please do use French as a gateway to supporting your own home languages.

Jo Rhys-Jones has posted this video at Talkabout Primary MFL, a ning for those who teach (or are interested in teaching) Modern Foreign Languages in the Primary School. She describes it this way: "Three Yr 5 children from a mixed whole KS2 class made sock puppets and then two improvised a dialogue in French while the third filmed. The more phrases they used the more decorations they were then allowed to add to their sock puppets afterwards."

Pregny était une terre du Pays de Gex qui, au 12ème sècle, relevait des comtes de Genevois et, dès 1353, de la maison de Savoie. En 1536, les Bernois vinrent dégager Genève de l'emprise savoyarde et occupèrent notamment le Pays de Gex où ils introduisirent la Réforme. Calvin, qui prêchait à Genève, aimait à se reposer chez son frère à Pregny, dans une propriété qu'on appela depuis "l'Île Calvin". Mais en 1567, les Bernois, préférant s'assurer le Pays de Vaud, rendirent Pregny et les autres terres autour de Genève à la Savoie.

Vers la fin du 16ème siècle, la Savoie se fit plus menaçante. Les Genevois entreprirent alors une guerre préventive et occupèrent le Pays de Gex, lorsque les Bernois et la France leur retirèrent leur soutien. Le Conseil de Genève fut contraint de démanteler les châteaux qui pouvaient constituer un danger pour la cité : Gex, Divonne, Grand-Saconnex, Vernier... Jean de Brosses obtint que son château fût préservé, après avoir comblé le fossé et détruit l'enceinte. En 1601, Pregny-Chambésy passa, avec le Pays de Gex, à la France.

Tournay formait dès la fin du 13ème siècle un fief des sires d'Anières, vassaux de l'évêque de Genève. Il passa ensuite aux Genthod jusqu'en 1536, puis aux Viry et aux Lullin. Entre 1573 et 1583, Jean de Brosses acquit le château de Tournay, ainsi que les terres de Pregny et Chambésy dont l'ensemble correspondait déjà au territoire communal actuel. Lorsque le Pays de Gex fut réuni au gouvernement de Bourgogne, Henri IV confia la charge de grand bailli de Gex à son fils, Pierre de Brosses.

Dans la deuxième moitié du 18ème siècle, Voltaire s'établit à Ferney. Il chercha à agrandir sa propriété par le domaine de Tournay et insista auprès de Charles de Brosses, premier président du Parlement de Bourgogne, de le lui louer à vie, avec les meubles, les bois, les bestiaux et même le titre de seigneur et comte de Tournay. Son enthousiasme tomba bientôt et le bail à vie devint un sujet de dispute. En 1758, le pamphlétaire écrivait : "Son château était une masure faite pour les hiboux, un comté, mais à faire rire...", tandis que de Brosses l'accusait de décimer ses bois et d'avoir puisé la carrière de molasse. En 1815, la France céda au nouveau Canton de Genève Pregny-Chambésy et cinq autres communes gessiennes.

Languages (Ages 7 to 18)

Gorseville is an imaginary French town situated on my dining room table. It features characters and locations bought at the Early Learning Centre (Happyland range). My pupils record the voices of the characters in French and, at the weekend, my own children bring them to life with stop-motion animation. At this early stage, the ongoing project features a purchase at the market stall, a pedestrian asking directions, and the arrival of a young English tourist who sends a video postcard.

The process is time-consuming, but inspires and motivates pupils - they all want to appear animated in Gorseville. It is a resource I have made available to other teachers.

The process is as follows:

I record the monologue/dialogue at school.
I save it on a pen drive and bring it home.
My children set up the characters on Saturday morning.
Using my standard digital video camera, I take a still picture.
We move the people a bit and take another snap.
On the PC, we import the pictures and sounds to Windows Movie Maker - it is all drag and paste.
Patience is required to synchronise the movements and music/sounds.
It is saved as a movie file.
Finally it is uploaded to YouTube or somewhere similar
